Pigs ears and sugary deliciousness

Here they call them 'palmiers'. Back home, we called them 'pigs ears'. Who cares? They're good! I found a weekly fix. There's a biscuit seller in the street market near my young student on a Wednesday that sells these bits of bliss and they're fresh and crunchy and buttery and sugary. Did I say they're good?

It more than made up for the rest of our eating today. We found some relatively cheap fish. I've been craving fish. Fish is hellaciously expensive here, so we never really get it. We decided a fish braai (bbq for those not in the 'know') would be just the ticket.

Can we say flakey cardboard? Pfewy! It was awful! We stuffed the fish with tomato, onion, herbs, spices, and all things tasty. The filling was nice... the fish... ghastly.

Just so you know, this is what a fish braai is meant to look like:

Thank you to Shane for the inspiring blog of what we miss so much.

I'm busy transferring and backing up mountains of data from what feels like centuries ago. There are plenty of "Wow! What on earth was I doing with that?!" moments. Why do I keep it all? I haven't looked at this stuff since the initial backup years 'n years ago. I should, of course, be planning my lessons for the week... and translating ghastlygynea (sic) stuff for tomorrow morning. I need a prepared script... in Portuguese... because my translator is sitting in England and the prospect of taking Jurgis, however capable as a translator, into the gynea's office with me is rather... uh... no... ain't gonna work. Yep... taking myself off for my once-a-decade visit to a lady doc.

I did no Lithuanian study this weekend. Bad. In fact, come to think of it now... I've done very little of anything remotely useful this weekend. Looking at everyone else's blogs, you've all been so busy. Must be the summer weather up there. Here it was just another middling warm day. Winter? Hmph!

  1. I call those ELEPHANT EARS! And yes, they are wonderful!
I am sorry about the fish though, what a disappointment!
We had a nice frittata, used up many leftover veggies.
Good to do the gyno visit on occasion, you will hear about mine sometime, she retired but not after upsetting me by advertising that when they stopped doing OB they were specializing in "GERIATRIC GYNO" two words that women never really want to hear together!
Give yourself a break! It's OK to take a weekend off, you'd be the 1st to say that to me or Kippy! Tomorrow is another day! I hope that you had some good rest :-)

  2. Elephant ears? Not sure which sound more or less appealing... the elephant ears or pig ears.

'Geriatric gyno'??? *faints* That whole thing is meant to end with menopause. Whadyamean 'geriatric'?? No fair!

  3. I know. I was on hold one day and they had it on an phone advert. I was horrified. This from a woman who was CLEARLY 15 years older than me but always, always said things like "Women our age".....
    B-word....
There are ugly, ugly blogs in the past as you can imagine.

  5. Here those little cookies are butterfly cookies. Pigs ears are, well, just that. We get them (cured, of course) for the dogs to chew on. (refuses to talk about GYN, fingers in ears....lalalalalala)

  6. During pow wow, that's fry bread. During fair week - Elephant Ears. It all looks the same to me. I don't like it really, no matter what it's called. Always hold out for chocolate, my downfall.

It's so disappointing to finally get what you're craving then have it turn out less than edible...sigh. And here I'm up to my ears in fish. Makes me feel guilty too. I really would love to share with you. The boys are constantly out fishing.

  9. That pastry looks delicious! Ugh. Sorry about the fish. That stinks, especially when you are craving a certain thing. Good luck with that appointment, m'friend! And cut yourself a little slack on being busy, ok? You've had a lot on your plate and a lot of stuff filling up your head.

  10. Somehow fish braai, pigs ears and gynae appointments should not be in the same blog ... :-I
backing up is way more important than preparing lessons .... Can't you let them watch Sesame Street for once? :)

  11. UGH. I can't imagine taking a hubby into the gynecologist office with me...oh dear! I thought about you today, I went for an interview and they wanted to know what languages I speak. I told them I'm very receptive to Spanish, lol. Then I explained what I meant in Spanish.. oy.

  13. Debbie, butterfly cookies sound nice. I always thought they looked like anything but pigs or elephant ears. Back home, our dogs had pigs ears (the real thing) both cured and uncured. Eh... gyn... blog coming up eventually.

Jules, are they fried up there? Wondering about the 'fry bread'. Send me some fish! Oh wait... perhaps I should just go there for the fish ; )

Sandy, I expect you would. They're good.

Ien, cravings are so easy to inspire.

Kippy, it was (is) delicious. I'm sitting starying at the remains and resisting... resisting...! Cut myself some slack? That's coming from you? *cackles*

Katey, you are quite right. Each one should have had its own blog. They wouldn't understand Sesame street, I'm afraid... and no TV anyway.

Kat, I should have taken him. It would have been easier. There were no examinations or anything, just the usual piles of questions and paperwork and misunderstandings. I'm going to read about your interview... caught a glimpse of it earlier : )

Marty, Jurgis is much the same. It doesn't bother him, but... *cringe... shudder...*

  14. I read the title of your blog and thought, "You like to eat real pig ears?" Like, real, off the pig, chewy ears. I'm very glad you are talking about pastries! We'd call them elephant ears, too, because they are so big.

Even if there weren't exams, just questions, I'd rather not answer them in front of my spouse, feels too private, even though we've been married for ages.

Hey, you're just keeping balance in the world by having a more laid-back time while others are busy :)

  15. Fried in tons of grease. I can't even stand the smell. ...phewey!

.....stands by the boat tapping foot on the sand and waiting to hand you a rod and reel......oh, I have a rule in my boat though. You fish with me...gotta bait your own. :)
