Just a thought....
Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

Starting over

I found this article recently and it got me thinking. Actually, it doesn't do much to get me thinking of our dream. A while back, Kippy and Jaime wanted me to talk about my perfect home. Then just recently, someone mentioned being envious of a life of ease. I often say "I'm jealous" and you'll usually find it's relating to a certain way of life... a life we'd love to live again, a truly simple life.

Second Act

"We embark on a career path or a job before we really know ourselves at a very early age, but I think we're still a work in progress and over the course of your life you can stitch together a quilt of what you want to be and who you want to be." Lisa Schwartz
Now, if I were envious of a lifestyle, it's the one this lady has built for herself. That is a dream!

A couple more videos of people starting over and fulfilling a dream... truly inspirational! I've linked to the videos, so I don't overload this page for those with slow connections:

Gypsy (back), Vilkas (left) and Noble (front right), our 3 Muskateers. Gypsy was the older, sensible one, who kept the brats in check. To the left was the raspberry patch - wild and thorny, but a thrill to harvest. Through the gateway behind them was the stand of mulberry trees, kids' paradise, and beyond that, the stream. The dogs were lying under the pretty, but infernal Tibouchina tree - the leaves, when dry, make excellent dye *sigh* It never comes out!

For those new to my list or those who missed the original post, this blog speaks about the life we came from, which is poles apart from the life we're in now. We'll have that again : )

Last night, Tat and I were chatting. A possible hermitage came up, but she's not the hermit type, being gregarious and all that. We settled on farming with goats, who are pretty cool critters, with Jurgis taken along as slave labour, something he seems to thrive on. Ah... now there's a life, hm?

  17. Yes!! Poor PE needed it so badly. Seems all the thundering in the stadium has done some good. I hope there's rain in the catchment areas though. Methinks they need to move the catchment areas, as the rain never falls there.

  19. No, no don't go for having goats Tint - they are too addictive and you'll always miss them if you have to go on and do something else. Sheep are easier to forget. lol.

  20. I glanced over this post yesterday and it got me thinking as the article had got you thinking!
That's such a nice lifestyle to go back, your simple life. Where was it? In SA, right? Are the pics from the same "life"? German Shepherds! So gooorgeous they are! I love the 3 of them chilling out there.. The link for your Whensday post takes me to this blog again, wonder if there might be something wrong with that?

I totally agree with Lisa Schwartz, especially when she says, "We embark on a career path or a job before we really know ourselves at a very early age." In fact, it's something Damian and I talk about very often. He frequently notices how I enjoy doing what I do, even if it's not something I've dreamt of all my life. But it's something I definitely chose with my heart and after quite a struggle with my first choice. Now, he's been facing the same dilemma lately. He's not happy with his career but he doesn't know what would make him happy and I can't convince him that it's not too late to find a new path.. Anyway, I don't want to take over your blog, nor relate this to the career sphere only, but it was quite a spark for our last night's chat let me tell ya, twinkie ;))

  21. Sorry I'm so slow in responding. Our internet is awful today. It's taken so long just to get to where I can change pages. Blame the world cup lol

Lois, I cracked up laughing. You'd know over there, wouldn't you? : )

Dani, the link's working fine for me. Not sure what was happening. Yes, those pics are from that life back home in South Africa. Here, it's just city and concrete. Those two German Shepherds... Gypsy had a story behind her. A beautiful dog. Vilkas wasn't with us for very long, unfortunately. Very sad.

It never hurts to evaluate where you are in life. Both Jurgis and I made very radical career changes fairly late in life and I know this journey is nowhere near over, so more change is possible. Damien could research other careers. I know there are online aptitude tests. Google it.... there are many free tests... it's fun to do and who knows where having something pointed out to him will lead. I believe life is too short to keep doing something that doesn't bring you joy : )

    Twinkie... ha!
"Slang a person or thing that seems appealing or attractive but has little value or worth" Erm.... I won't go into the other meaning of the word I found. Let's say, it's very much less than complimentary.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well, you know I only meant Twinkie in the most complimentary of ways. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I kinda dig starting over from time to time... and definitely prefer a more "simple" life.... though I think people often forget that "simple" doesn't mean "easy!" ;o)

I'm sooo excited about the adventures coming up for you and yours... can't wait to take in the sights from your point of view ;oD

  24. Link's working fine today.. anyway! oh yeah, me too I only thought of the idea of twinkling! and assumed you were our twinkling friend ;)
